Eric Schmidt: 'Google tablet coming within six months'
Google's Executive Chairman is good value for a headline-grabbing quote. Sitting down with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera at the opening of the company's new offices on the former NABISCO bakery, he said "in the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality." Take the translation with a pinch of salt, but he either means the company will be launching a "marketing" push with all of its hardware partners, or we'll be seeing Google-branded tablets like the Nexus range of phones by next Summer.
How to Copy Music from Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to Your Computer for Free [How To]
Apple, true to form, makes it simple to put media and files on your iDevice but the road really only goes one way. It can be pretty difficult to copy anything (or everything) back to your computer without a lot of trouble and sacrifice, but it's even harder to find a good, free solution to that problem amongst the many choices available. You could spend the better part of your week sifting through your options, or you could just read this post instead. More »

Dropbox Automator triggers monotonous tasks with the uploading of a file
There are plenty of tools and apps out there that automate the essential computing tasks that face us every day. Some are time consuming others are simply monotonous -- but they must be done. Dropbox Automator combines time-saving task mastery with perhaps our favorite cloud storage solution. The service watches a designated folder for uploads, when a new file is added an action is triggered -- everything from converting documents, to resizing an image or tweeting a link. And that's just scratching the surface. There are already plenty of automation scripts in the fledgling service's repertoire and devs can add there own by creating a SOAP webservice. Hit up the source link to get started now.

ClockworkMod Tether serves free Android USB tethering, no root required
Not content to provide us with ClockworkMod Recovery and other fine hacks, Koush just made a free USB tethering app available for Android aptly called ClockworkMod Tether Alpha. While it's not the first app to bypass paid tethering plans, it supports unrooted phones and works with Linux, Mac and Windows computers. Just enable USB debugging on your phone, download the appropriate installer for your desktop OS of choice, then connect both devices via USB and you're all set. The installation process creates a virtual network adapter on your computer and pushes a matching APK to your phone. A proxy is used to avoid detection by the carriers.
We tested the app on a late-model MacBook Air running OS X Lion and an AT&T-branded Samsung Captivate Glide -- along with a couple other handsets -- without much success (as documented in the screenshot above). Then again, based on the discussions following Koush's Google+ post (source link below), the app appears to work for many folks and continues being tweaked on an hourly basis. Clearly your mileage will vary, but let us know in the comments how it's working out if you've installed the app.
Insync: Wave 'Bye, Bye, Bye' to Dropbox
There's another cloud based storage service planning to knock DropBox from its perch, only this one's also got the benefit of an amusing name. Insync offers all the same online-file management and sharing facilities that you'll be familiar with, but the company's tooled up for a price war. It's using Google storage as a backbone, charging only $0.25 per GB/year rather than DropBox's $2.00 -- with the hope that people follow their wallets and the promise of deep integration into Mountain View's online services including being able to edit your documents online. (Although we're not sure what would happen if Google's long rumored GDrive suddenly appears.) After the break we've got a video by Marques Brownlee that tours the service which we assure you, is free of Joey Fatone.
CloudOn offers Microsoft Office functionality for iPad, your parents will love it
If you got your parents an iPad for Christmas, you were probably thanked with this: "Can it run Office?" CloudOn may be the answer, the cloud-based service letting you log in to create and edit Office documents on the aforesaid slate. Similar to a lot of remote services, CloudOn runs Office on its own end and allows you to pull in documents from Dropbox for editing and post them back when you're done. Strangely, CloudOn launched on the App Store as a freebie but was pulled due to heavy demand. The company has asked users to sign up to be notified when the app goes back in the App Store. In other news, Las Vegas oddsmakers are now taking bets as to which will occur first; the release of an iOS-native version of Microsoft Office or the Robot Apocalypse

Daft Punk's 'Derezzed' finally heard the way it was meant to be -- on five floppy drives
Love costumed French electronic duos, movies about video games and music made by finding alternative uses for outdated computer hardware? Well, feast your ears on this. MrSolidSnake745, who already has a pretty healthy selection of floppy disked video game themes, is offering the world his take on Daft Punk's "Derezzed," from the Tron: Legacy soundtrack, played on five floppy drives. It's loud, it's chaotic and it's enough to make us want to pull the old lightcycle out of storage. Video after the break.

Lenovo Racer-A sporting Intel Midfield chip
Here at ShowStoppers CES 2012, Intel showed off the new Lenovo Racer-A smartphone making use of Intel’s Midfield chip. Until now, we haven’t seen Intel’s processor in a production smartphone. It is currently clocked at 1.6GHz running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). This particular phone is running over AT&T bands – absent of 4G LTE.
Most noticeable is their heavily skinned Android OS. Everything about it is completely unique to other cellphones, from the lockscreen all the way down to the widgets. Some aspects look much like Lenovo’s current tablets. Specifications of the device include an 8MP rear facing camera and 4.5 inch 720p display.
This was definitely the biggest surprise here tonight, and we can’t wait to see more of what this phone has to offer – particularly in terms of battery life. A consistent issue with many Android devices is the fact that they can’t last an entire day on a single charge, and for some – battery life is their top selling point.

ASUS MeMo 171 7-inch Honeycomb tablet hands-on
We’ve heard plenty regarding this next tablet that we spotted over at the ASUS while wandering the halls at CES. This is the ASUS Eee Pad Memo 171 although we’ve seen a few names in the past. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of it but now it’s in the US we quickly grabbed some pictures. It’s currently set to hit Europe soon and we have all the details.
The ASUS MeMO 171 features a 7″ 1280 x 800 IPS display with great viewing angles and exceptionally great colors and brightness. Unlike it’s recently unveiled brother this model doesn’t have the quad-core, instead it will be offered with the Qualcomm 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM.
Again, this 7″ tablet isn’t as thin as the popular Transformer Prime but they’ve packed all that power into a smaller package so that is one thing to consider. The MeMO 171 has micro-USB, micro-HDMI and even micro-SD for extra storage. For those unfamiliar it also has a stylus hiding in the bezel below that doubles as a great handle while using in landscape mode. Around back is a 5 megapixel camera and they’ve tossed a 1.2 MP front for video calling.
ASUS has added an integrated MeMic bluetooth headset for superior audio quality and hands-free calling — yes hands-free calling. Currently only slated for a Europe debut this tablet features GSM radios and was actually rocking a T-Mobile SIM (as seen below). According to ASUS they have no immediate plans to bring this to the US but that could change at any moment. They also state it will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich “soon”. Enjoy the hands-on video and pictures below.

ASUS Padfone 2012 refresh eyes-on
In case you didn’t notice, we were able to get up close and personal with all of the tablets coming from ASUS in the next few months. One of those that I’m sure many of you are as excited about as me is the ASUS Padfone — The phone inside a tablet. This 10″ Android tablet saves a spot for the new ASUS smartphone to fit snug inside and act as the internals and operate the tablet. Now with Ice Cream Sandwich unifying both Honeycomb and ICS this will be better than ever.
We’ve seen this before in more than a few different iterations but today at the ASUS hall we got another look. The tablet and smartphone both have been refined and updated with the latest and greatest for 2012. Being under glass, and a lock and key we only have a few short details. The smartphone appears to be a 4.3″ AMOLED display and has been updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich rather than Gingerbread. The rear is rocking an 8 MP camera and dual-LED flash.
ASUS is touting this as a device that will allow you to “enlarge your screen size on the go”. Your SIM, storage, processor and more is all inside the phone. Since it was sadly hidden behind a large bullet-proof glass we were unable to look for ports and options on the tablet. Check out our pictures below and see if you can spot anything.
We will be seeing more of the Padfone at MWC 2012, and we’ll be their live to capture that too.
